  As a volunteer at a school for underprivileged children with special needs, I assisted children with autism and cerebral palsy with craft activities to raise money for a school fundraiser. I helped teach classes at the school and also provided assistance to physiotherapists and occupational therapists over a one month period.   To gain a realistic insight into the skills needed in medicine, I volunteered at a tertiary hospital for six weeks. Effective communication between doctors, nurses, and theatre staff was also evident when I witnessed a tonsillectomy. I understood that a good rapport with patients and excellent interpersonal skills are vital to the profession.
