I was responsible for translating technical drawings so the workers knew what to do, monitoring the government's tender site for upcoming projects to bid on, supplying bids, and helping to plan work on site. I completed the cost estimation for the winning bid involving the construction of an aerated wastewater lagoon in Ross River. I oversaw the project until the season shut down when my employment contract also finished. I calculated and submitted bids for test pitting contracts at the Faro Mine Complex and aided in coordinating the work and equipment required to complete those contracts. During my time there, I gained experience in working in remote locations, working with contractors, cost estimating, project planning and management, health and safety plan development, and additional experience working on construction sites.

I contributed to a province wide data collection project; my crew covered a significant portion of Saskatchewan's 26,000 km of provincial highway. In addition to the data collection, I tested for quality control on highway maintenance projects at various locations in the province. I planned daily and weekly routes for my two-person crew to avoid excessive backtracking when data collecting, and supplied daily updates to my supervisors for whichever project we worked on. I also fixed issues that involved equipment failures, contract complications, vehicle breakdowns, and traffic accommodation.

I worked on several projects where I set up stationing for a highway resurfacing project alongside one of the junior engineers and fellow summer student, and collected topographical and as-built survey points for proposed bridge to culvert projects in Northern SK. I had exposure to traffic impact studies and collected traffic data for analysis, archaeological dig sites and impacts on construction. As well, I had the opportunity to see the conclusion of a transportation policy and development plan for a small city and attended the council meeting where the results were presented.

I spent the first two weeks of May completing the survey camp required for my degree, after which I began my summer job with the City of Saskatoon where I put those skills into practice under the guidance of a full-time surveyor. I staked out water, storm sewer, and sanitary sewer lines to be installed for new neighbourhood developments. We also laid out roadway and site grading stakes. On rainy days when the main sites were shut down, I executed preliminary roadway surveys for planned maintenance, and utilized various survey equipment including GPS and rod and level.

I created predictive maintenance routes using thermal imaging on the mill equipment. To complement the data collection, I coded a spreadsheet that allowed for the easy analysis of the equipment. In addition to this data analysis spreadsheet, I was instrumental in using VBA in Microsoft Access and Excel to expedite the transfer of equipment data to a new asset management system. I had no prior knowledge of coding but learned quickly through my supervisor and independent research. Whenever required, I also assisted the project engineer with overseeing equipment inspection and repairs, and even had the opportunity to inspect the inside of a tank being repaired following confined space training and risk assessment.
