The Laidlaw Research and Leadership Programme is awarded to first year undergraduate students for academic excellence and future leadership and research aspirations. It is delivered through two research-intensive summer projects as well as leadership training. In my first six-week research project, I investigated the role of the gut microbiome in determining the clinical outcome of allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT) through a literature review. I was supervised by Dr. Mona Bajaj-Elliott at the UCL Great Ormond Street Institute of Child Health.During my second summer research project, I undertook eight weeks of laboratory research at the Institute of Child Health at UCL under the supervision of Dr Mona Bajaj-Elliott. Here, I investigated the effect of cytokines on tight junctions of the intestinal epithelial barrier. I gained various laboratory skills such as intestinal cell culture, RNA extraction, transepithelial electrical resistance measurements as well as confocal microscopy. Furthermore, I co-organised the Mini-Symposium Harnessing the Gut Microbiota for Better Health (May 2021) with UCL Great Ormond Street Institute of Child Health together with Dr Mona Bajaj-Elliott. In addition, I engaged in nine leadership workshops and weekly laboratory meetings with scientific discussions and presentations throughout the year. My other public engagement activities included creating an online presentation on antimicrobial resistance for the Rise of the Resistance Festival (June 2021) and helping out with a microbiology workshop for A level students.
