Legal Placement (Litigation)
-
Feb 2016 - Feb 2016
As part of the Bar Association of Qld Indigenous Mentoring Scheme, I was mentored by His Honour Judge David G Searles and barrister Catherine Muir of Burnett Lane Chambers. Working within the firm's civil litigation division, I researched matters involving the Competition and Consumer Act 2010 (Cth). In particular, I was tasked with creating a summary of industrial relations matters in a narrow category on the request of a senior partner and was highly commended for my work. Legal Placement (Native Title)
-
Dec 2015 - Jan 2016
Gilkerson Legal is a boutique law firm that specialises in native title law. This legal placement was a unique opportunity for me to bring together my passion for human rights while broadening my legal research, legal support and administration experience. I directly supported three solicitors performing legal research related to numerous matters involving unfair dismissal and native title claims. This included researching and interpreting legislation including the Native Title Act 1993 (Cth), Aboriginal Heritage Act 2003 (Qld), Petroleum and Geothermal Energy Act 2010 (Qld), and the Mineral Resources Act 1989 (Qld). The legal placement provided me with valuable insight into the breadth and complexity of native title cases and the interaction between parties including corporates and indigenous land councils.

Casual Support Worker, Nextt, 2016 – present Contact Support Worker, ProCare Personnel, 2011 – 2016 Indigenous Intensive Social Worker, The Benevolent Society, 2013 – 2015 In-Home Support Worker, Kalwun Development Corporation, 2012 – 2013 Family Support Worker, Save the Children, 2008 – 2011 Indigenous Child, Youth and Family Counsellor, NSW Health, 2005 – 2007 Indigenous Forensic Mental Health Worker, Qld Health, 2005 Indigenous Child and Youth Mental Health Worker, NSW Health, 2004 – 2005 In 15 years in social work I have devoted myself to the care, case management and intervention of Indigenous people, families and people with mental health issues. This work has inspired me to pursue legal qualifications to consolidate and broaden my knowledge and capacity to support and help others. The work has often been high risk, allowing me to develop a very high-level cultural sensitivity, advanced conflict resolution skills and emotional resilience. I managed large, complex caseloads, specialising in community outreach and providing counselling, support and intervention to families, individuals, youth and children. Much of my work was in coordination with government and community sector stakeholders, to deliver best practice integrated service delivery. I was often called on by partner agencies and stakeholders to play the role of cultural consultant. I believe the skillset my social work has allowed me to develop will be a strong advantage to me as a law graduate.

Alternative Care Case Worker
-
2002 - 2004
In this role I was responsible for facilitating the extensive and often intrusive interviewing and vetting process for candidates wishing to foster children. Working in strict accordance with legislation and Departmental policy and protocol were extremely important, as was maintaining tact and professionalism through an often difficult process.
