      Indianola Informal K-8 is an alternative school within the Columbus City School system. We believe children learn by doing and experiencing, with the teacher as a guide. Teachers plan and teach using an integrated curriculum in recognition of the fact that children do not learn subjects in isolation. Children's interests become the foundation of the curriculum as we look to build authentic learning experiences together with our students. The learning community respects diversity in learning styles and abilities and encourages students to view the world from multiple perspectives. Classroom projects allow students to express and reflect on their learning in multiple ways. We invest a great deal of time in establishing routines and expectations. The classroom community is built gradually and centers around trust and mutual respect. Problems are addressed collectively. Whenever possible, children spend two years with the same teacher as part of a loop or a multi-age family grouping. We foster autonomy and teach children to make responsible decisions and be accountable for their own learning. The arts is an integral part of our program. Visual arts, music and dance play a central role in our curriculum. Show less
