As the Career Advisor for Barton Community College's BASICS program, ( Building Academic Skills in Correctional Settings) I meet with offenders wanting to break the cycle of their " criminal lifestyle" as they would call it. During this meeting I develop an Education and Employment Plan for the offender and administer the O*NET Interest Profile to provide guidance through the selection of vocational programs and/or AGS coursework. Together we discuss their interests and why these courses are right for them. Barton offers a variety of vocational programs that help offenders become marketable upon release. My goal is to help show the offenders that even in prison you deserve a second chance and just because they have a felony does not mean they are a "felon." After they are enrolled in classes I will meet with them once or twice throughout the semester to address any needs or concerns they may be having in class. In my position I will also help offenders fill out their FASFA, identify whether or not they are in loan default, if they have any child arrears and what kind of employment limitations they may have based on conviction and state statues.
