It is a special occurrence when you meet someone with the amount of passion, dedication, and enthusiasm for conservation that Nicole has. I interned under Nicole with the Canadian Organization for Tropical Education and Rainforest Conservation’s sea turtle monitoring project. Her resilience and ability to stay positive & focused in the changing field conditions of Costa Rica made her a leader. Her respect for wildlife and the environment was clear with every sea turtle she helped return to the ocean. Nicole’s attention to detail made her an excellent hands-on teacher, and it ensured that all data collected met scientific standards. It was her sense of humor and encouragement during strenuous beach patrols that stood out to me and helped spur the team forward. I look up to Nicole and she, without a doubt, has my highest recommendation.

I have shared a full year with Nicole, volunteering in wildlife conservation in Costa Rica. Certain of her potential to make the difference in the conservation world, I keep following her steps into marine life protection. Nicole has proven great leadership skills. Scientifically knowledgeable and humanly careful, she has brought tens of volunteers to follow her on the field under harsh conditions. She was fantastic at keeping herself and her teams motivated to work through all-night patrols on a treacherous beach, through obscurity, underneath stars or storms, threatened by wild dogs, poachers or infections. Her undeflected belief in doing what is right makes her a hard worker, never giving up. Don't be fooled by her humility, Nicole is a must have at your side.

Assisting the marine turtle monitoring program as part of my MSc Thesis. As a patrol leader, I conducted nightly patrols to encounter nesting females of 4 protected species on Playa Norte, Tortuguero; leatherback, green, hawksbill and loggerhead. Emergence data was collected from nesting individuals including flipper tag identification, biometric data and clutch size. Assisting the marine turtle monitoring program as part of my MSc Thesis. Latin American Sea Turtles (LAST) is an NGO partnership of WIDECAST Central America. This non-profit organisation was founded in 2004 and has been running for over 10 years. LAST focusses on sea turtle conservation and research in Costa Rica. I worked for LAST for 6 months as the head research assistant. This position was physically and mentally challenging, working long hours in a remote island with challenging conditions. This job requires walking 10km at night searching for sea turtles. It is unsociable hours and requires a lot of dedication to this field of work. Responsibilities include: Supervising and training 3 research assistants Training short-term volunteers and planning daily activities Night patrol guide for a small team of volunteers Hatchery Building and maintenance to ensure the highest hatching success of the nests Station maintenance Collecting and relocating nests to the hatchery External and internal tagging of 3 species of sea turtle Collecting biometric data from adult sea turtles and hatchlings Successfully releasing hatchings to the sea Nest excavations to calculate hatching and emergence success Managing large tour groups and school groups Data collection and analysis Through this experience, I have developed my field skills, my biological skills and also learned a lot about the biology of sea turtles, endangered species and marine conservation. I have also gained management and coordination skills through working with large groups of volunteers and leading daily activities. Show less
