It was my lucky day when Nicola agreed to work with me again, this time in communications at Roots of Empathy. I knew she would elevate our work to the next level, and she did. Over and over again. Nicola thinks big, and delivers the detail. Vision and execution. She's the first to say, "What about this?" And then she does it. She created content, connected and built relationships, and used new and existing technologies to build awareness of our programs and their impact. If she hadn't used a technology or platform before, she learned how to do it. She used her journalist's instincts to produce and edit video and create clear and captivating graphics. Nicola also created an inspired, warm voice for Roots of Empathy's social media that won fans across all platforms and led to substantial organic growth of our communities. Nicola is an exceptional writer, too. In addition to social media, she wrote for our website, promotional materials, book chapters and proposals, annual reports, and lots more. And then there's Nicola as a person - transparent, honest, and so much fun to work with. I've said this before and I will say it a second time - I'd work with her again in a second.

Nicola and I worked together at TVOParents for five years and I'm very grateful for having had her by my side, literally. Nicola was our homepage editor and a content producer. She had incredible passion for her work. She saw the big picture while caring deeply about the details. She constantly asked, "What will this be like for the user?" I relied on her editorial scrutiny of the blogs and other content I posted. She was adept at creating content - she had great ideas and strong journalistic instincts - and was equally adept at the technical aspects of website development and maintenance. We called her our "textpert". If she didn't have the answer to something, she found it. Always. She's persistent, diligent, a check and double-check kind of person. She regularly presented us with new programs and apps we could use to improve our site. Nicola and I worked together on a pitch to develop an app for teachers and she was invaluable in knowing what we needed and how to do it. Nicola worked night and day, and that's not an exaggeration, to build our social media community, including finding and engaging in Twitter chats and forums and scouring the internet for relevant, useful, interesting information to share with our parenting/educator community. She did all of that with humanity, honesty, transparency and humour. Nicola is a warm, funny, caring colleague who I looked forward to seeing everyday. I would work with her again in a second.

I was involved in writing, managing social media, graphics, video editing, website planning and redesign, event planning, and content creation as well as organizing the multiple media assets of a well-respected international non profit in its 25th year - 14 countries, one million children reached. We relaunched our website, including international sub domains, expanded social media platforms, created online shopping, created and expanded online video channel, implemented online event registration and tracking, and quadrupled our social media following once I took responsibility for all social platforms.

    • Homepage Editor - TVOParents.com
      • Oct 2010 - Aug 2012

I was the Homepage Editor of TVOParents.com - a site designed to help parents help their kids succeed in school and life. It explored how kids learn. We won Best Parenting site from the first peer-juried World Media Awards in 2012 - And our online community grew dramatically (one of my core duties) - facebook by 500% - twitter by 100% - by reaching out to our go-to experts: parents and teachers. In addition, I was trained as a digital media producer and maintained the editorial calendar. I was heavily involved in the website redesign - including determining the organization of the site, writing functional specifications, auditing of over 1000 pieces of content, and learning (very, very quickly) the ins and outs of Drupal. Learning and understanding web design and basic design principles awakened a nascent love of graphics.

    • Web Producer
      • Feb 2007 - Oct 2010

I got to combine my online and broadcast skills on Your Voice, then a new, live, interactive online parenting show - with a unique hook - how do kids learn? I researched, pitched stories, booked expert panels, wrote scripts, ran the live chatroom every week, built community with our users, learned about our Cold Fusion CMS, and maximized the site's multimedia storytelling...and I got to indulge my love of psychology and brain science in the pursuit of understanding how children develop and learn.

    • Writer/Researcher/Producer/Director
      • 1997 - 2007

I was a field producer in television for 10 years. Long form, short form, travelling from Europe to Asia to Africa to South America, and home to tell stories. I worked mostly on science documentaries (including the series Journeys which was nominated for 4 Geminis), lifestyle programs, and the most difficult of all, youth programs, including CBC's Make Some Noise which won the Gemini for best youth non-fiction program, and Vox, a youth magazine show on TVO, also nominated for a Gemini. I wrote and happily discovered the blogging world - diving headlong into the world of food and what it means to us, okay...what it means to me.
