If you are left to rely on your group sponsored long term disability policy or a contract sponsored through your professional medical association like the AMA - ACOG - AAP - ACP - or carriers like North Western Mutual then if you suffer a disability in your medical specialty you considered totally disabled if you engaged in another opportunity where you are earning income. I met with a Dermatologist who only owned policies through the AMA and her group sponsored plan through Mount Sinai Hospital. She made a career from treating movie stars and promoting Pro-Active Skincare solutions on QVC. She was diagnosed with a serious debilitating disease that prevented her from using her hands and is considered totally disabled through the AMA (NY Life policy) and her employer-sponsored disability policy. Both her policies do not provide "true" own specialty disability coverage which means that she was forced to retire or limit her income production from all other sources to less than 20% of her pre-disability earnings and although she is completely capable and willing to do other activities that would generate income her disability policies force her to turn away other opportunities because her coverage does not allow her to earn another income while collecting her disability benefit. My physician clients never have this problem - I work with all 6 individual Own Specialty Disability carriers that provide full coverage should you suffer a disability that prevents you from working in your medical specialty regardless of any income you may earn in the future from doing something else leaving the choices of your future in your hands.
