Lumanti, is an organisation working with low-income urban communities in Kathmandu. Their work involves fighting evictions, encouraging women’s savings’ groups and supporting initiatives to develop infrastructure – such as community buildings, road paving and sanitation projects. I supported Lumanti fieldworkers providing technical assistance on projects, developing systems for building procurement, and producing two Nepali language manuals written for communities with low literacy levels. UDC Architects was a consultancy connected to the PNG architectural school at Unitcech, Lae. They focused on exploring vernacular building traditions, regionally appropriate construction and training programs for students and carpenters. My role included working with rural and urban communities to take projects through from inception to completion, including a Conference Centre, a community-operated training centre and a series of community-operated guesthouses.
