June 2011 – September 2012 (Seconded to Cancer Research UK)Experiments designed to measure the time-resolved fluorescence lifetime and anisotropy of the fluorescent protein MCherry, in pH dependent environments.May 2011 – June 2011 (UCL)Supervised experiments (as part of CoMPLEX MRes course) to measure the time-resolved fluorescence lifetime and anisotropy of FRET sensors used for transfection into Human Embryonic Kidney (HEK) cells.Apr 2009 – May 2011 (Seconded to Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (DSTL))The project involved the characterisation of non-linear optical molecules developed by DSTL for optical limiting and sensor protection. Characterisation involved measurement of two-photon cross sections and time-resolved pump-probe studies of excited state dynamics. Feb 2009 – Apr 2009 (UCL)Collaboration with The National Heart and Lung Institute (Imperial College London) to measure excited state dynamics in proteins, also collaborated with Cancer Research UK to study the fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) in biological systems.Oct 2007 – Feb 2009 (Seconded to Illumina Inc. (manufacturer of genome sequencing instrumentation))The project investigated the causes of fluorescence saturation in nucleotide bound fluorophores used in genome sequencing. Studies of triplet trapping were investigated using intensity dependent single molecule fluorescence correlation spectroscopy (FCS) and time resolved fluorescence lifetime measurements.
