My time at Buro Happold allowed me to begin my career as an electrical engineer and offered me some great opportunities to work on some amazing projects. I worked on a wide variety of projects from research and development centres, residential developments, universities and banks, as well as many more. I worked between Riba stages 2-5, consulting with many other disciplines and external consultants.I have designed and completed electrical models in ProDesign and Dialux, as well as associated schematics and drawings. I have also worked in Revit extensively to complete lighting, small power, fire alarm, data, containment, security and a wide range of other drawings and documents associated with electrical engineering in building services.

Year in IndustryI decided to complete a year in industry during my time at university, which I complete as of July 2018. During this time I worked as a Network engineer for the CDH team for BT, based in Leeds. This was my very first experience of Network engineering and so I had to learn quickly and adapt to being part of the already well formed team.My first role which started as soon as I arrived in September was the Christmas Pressure project for the contract of Royal Mail (RMG). This project was ensuring that enough warehouses were open over the Christmas period to cope with the increase in mail. Obviously this meant there were very specific deadlines to adhere to for when these sites were to open, as this would be when workers and mail started arriving at site. BT's role in this was to provide WAN connectivity and Wireless Access covering an agreed amount of the warehouse, such that the handheld devices used to scan mail, could be operated. This project went ahead very well, other than one incident where a router did not show up on time, leading to a trip to Chesterfield by myself and a teammate, to manually collect and stage it, the day before the site was due to go live, being praised for our decisiveness.Using the skills and knowledge I gained from this project, I was moved to be Lead Technical Design Architect for another RMG project that was the WAN upgrade for all of RMG's RTW sites across GB. This was a significant pressure and responsibility increase, as now I was managing approximately 76 sites, with several support engineers, and the project was worth over £750,000.I managed this project well and delivered the upgrade for all the sites, save for a several where unexpected delays were endured from things like Civil's work being required, and permissions from local councils.Another contract I worked on during my time at BT was Lloyds Banking group. The most significant task I did here was working on the virtualisation of 2 core switches.

While in the summer holidays after my first year at Leeds, I managed to set up some work experience/shadowing with some field engineers of BT, working in EES (Engineering Exchange Services). I would go out in to the field with an engineer to learn about what goes into the infrastructure of the internet we rely upon so heavily. This was truly a fascinating experience and my only regret is that i could not do it for longer. I went out with several different types of engineer with different specialities and therefore got shown a lot about what it takes to maintain one of the many exchanges in Britain. I also got to see the difference in large exchanges (Faraday in London) to the tiny exchanges that service only several hundred people in Holt.I went out with a power engineer and was shown how the power is regulated and controlled, and how their is the engine backup present for a power failure, and the sets of batteries present tat need to be maintained for the relay time between failure and engine start. I was also shown the cooling systems for keeping the exchanges breaking, from Fresh Air Units, to Adiabatic Systems to the large fresh water system in place in Faraday London, that extracts and pumps water from the Thames around the building, to places where there is no external wall.I also went with a Transmission engineer who followed phone lines, in order to repair broken racks that have sagged and dislodged cars from the heat. Working under pressure to replace cars, as each network card serviced up to 64 people and for the time it was out, people are without internet.I also worked with a build engineer, helping route fibres from where they come in to the relevant switch or router. As well as this I spliced some fibres when making a new bypass route around Norfolk.I had a very enjoyable time working with BT, that culminated in a very special visit to the top of the BT tower with one of the tower riggers.

      • Apr 2015 - Aug 2015

After I returned from 2 months travelling, I got a job working as a call centre operative for a large telecommunications company. When I worked there I worked as a representative for the Tesco Mobile Repair Centre, so I worked for Anovo, but to the customer I worked for Tesco. I was part of the technical help centre, so I would be assisting customers in software faults and if the fault was severe enough, booking in the handset to the repair centre for repair. Often phones would not be covered by warranty so it was necessary to be very patient in order to deal with some very angry customers. This line of work gave me another interesting insight into the field of telecommunications and mobile phones, and it was also my first time working in a truly micromanaged working environment, where call length, off-call time and many other factors were constantly monitored. I did however enjoy my time there at Anovo, and was offered a permanent position if I was to return.

While working for Blue Arrow, I filled in as a kitchen assistant at Gresham's for somebody who had left at short notice. Due to the permanent nature of their departure, a position had opened up, and Gresham's were looking to fill it, and as I had been filling in for this person for 1-2 weeks when the position became available, I was the obvious choice as I had already experienced how the kitchen was run. I was wanted for the position by Gresham's, as they had to "buy-me" from Blue Arrow, as it was in my Blue Arrow contract that I couldn't work for a company introduced by Blue Arrow for 2 years, proving how desirable I was. The kitchen was an extremely high pressure environment, with the task of feeding 900 people for lunch everyday, as well as about 200 for breakfast and dinner, as it was a boarding school. This meant it was incredibly strictly run, with very precise timings for every job that occurred, from washing up after service, to laying out 400 strips of bacon at 5:00am for breakfast in 2 hours, to serving food to a waiting line of 100 people. I very much enjoyed my time at Gresham's, it was a very close knit team, that required everyone to work together and pull their weight in order to succeed. It also proved invaluable for funding my travel plans for my gap year.

During the same period I was working a 45 hour 5 day week at Gresham's School in the kitchen, I was also working an extra 10-15 hours on the weekend at Next as a customer service representative, as temporary staff over the busy Christmas period. Another example of a high pressure work environment, the Christmas period of any high street retail store is intense, and working on the shop floor or the tills at this time is all the more so. However, it did give me a very different perspective on Customer Service and an insight into how companies deal with large influxes in demand at a given time. I was also welcomed to work there again.

As my gap year began, I decided that I needed as much quick work as possible, so I joined 2 different recruitment agencies, Blue Arrow being one of them. Primarily I worked in the catering department, and as I was taking every job that was available to me, I ended up with a wide range of experience in many different locales. With Blue arrow I bar tended at the Gt. Yarmouth Horse Races for 3 days, worked as part of a team on multiple occasions to help deliver weddings, funerals and anniversaries, worked in a kitchen of a school where I got a more permanent job offer, as well as a whole host of other individual jobs.

      • Aug 2014 - Dec 2014

During this period of working, I became quite well know in the recruiting agency circles, to the point where I was individually sought by stand alone catering companies to fill in for missing persons, as a waiter, porter or chef's assistant. I therefore worked at a large variety of events from small dinner parties at someone's house, as part of a 2 person team, to large events such as the EDP Food Awards, for smaller catering companies such as purple Grape Catering, Lightfoot Catering and Julie Abbs Catering. This type of scope of different environments gave me a wealth of experience for working under different pressures as well as different scenarios.

Another recruitment agency I joined was Contract Personnel. Not dissimilar to Blue Arrow, I took every job that was offered to me, and as a car owner, I was offered every job, as I could take other people to the workplace, and I became known as very reliable. With CP, again, I worked primarily in the catering department, and so gained experience at high pressure events, such as bar-tending at Reload Festival, a silver-service event at Caistor Hall Hotel, which I had to be specifically trained for, and many more service events where I was part of a team as a kitchen porter, waiter, to chef's assistant, delivering a high standard of service.
