I had the pleasure of working with Nicholas at MBARI and shared an intern apartment with him over the summer. I am grateful for the opportunity i had to learn from him. Nick was highly motivated and had a unique combination of curiosity, creativity, and passion for his project that became infectious for the rest of the interns. His love of science was obvious; after a long day of engineering, he would come home and play with his 3d printer. I only worked with Nick a short time, but I take his many influences with me to every new project I'm on and I would definitely recommend him for any project that needs a careful eye for detail with an injection of creativity.

Generated new projects using the company flagship product, Circuit Cubes, to create fun education activities using LEGOs and common household materials for 8-12 year olds. Duties include: - Design and fabrication of small mechanical parts using 3D printer, CNC milling, and laser cutter. - Circuit board layout in Eagle CAD and fabrication to test new product concepts - Working with bill of materials to reduce part count, track changes, and estimate material cost. - Worked at the factory in Guangdong, China to help setup production lines and run quality checks - Take creative ideas and consolidated into mock up screens iOS wireframe layout. - Created bug reports and acted as the bridge between the app developers and hardware vendor. - Coordinate logistics for shipping cargo from Hong Kong to 3PL. - Ran inventory and purchase order systems and tracked all incoming shipments from vendors. Learned fundamentals of injection and blow mold design and assembly. Assisted with complete disassembly and rebuild of injection blow mold for plastic dairy bottles while working in a professional production shop. Duties included: - Squaring up aluminum stock on vertical knee mill before mounting in CNC mill - Measuring and scribing reference marks using height gauge on a granite table - Sandblasting of internal mold cavities without damaging parting lines - Bench work with hand scrapers to blend new features cut into an existing mold walls - Alignment of parting lines and replacement of worn pins and bushings - Replacement of o-rings and testing for leaks with compressed air Show less

Engineering internship to evaluate the feasibility of using an off-the-shelf MEMS inertial measurement unit (IMU) for estimating the underwater drifting velocity of a scientific coastal profiling float. Required writing the drivers and firmware in C# with lab experiments to determine if the sensor was sensitive enough to accurately estimate simulated buoy drifting velocities. These velocities were calculated from a dynamic model created in Simulink that predicted real world float accelerations from known current profiles in Monterey Bay. Duties included: - Designed a dynamic model to predict true velocity profiles of the float based on historic ocean data - Fabrication of data logger using GHI microcontroller and SD reader - Conducted experiments with CNC linear translation stage using custom trapezoid velocity curves - Created Matlab program to perform digital filtering and integration of raw sensor values - Showed that a $36 sensor was capable of detecting directional changes in under water currents while float was upcasting - Research findings presented at annual MBARI internship symposium and report Additional marine experiences: - Opportunity piloting ROV Ventana at depth of 1000 meters - Deployment of coastal profiling float aboard vessel Paragon - Assisted with retrieval of Liquid Robotics drone aboard vessel Paragon - Inspection of Land/Ocean Biogeochemical Observatory in Elkhorn Slough (LOBO) - Day cruise aboard research vessel Rachel Carson for inspection of failure in underwater MARS cable Show less

Performed primary research involving programming and operation of 3-axis and 5-axis milling machines for: tool life, surface roughness, and friction studies. Includes mounting/grinding/polishing metallurgical samples, use of optical and SEM imaging, impact hammer modal testing, writing research papers, and mentoring students. Training to operate 5-axis machine tool for metal laser cladding additive/subtractive process. Included manual programming and introduction to CAM based creation of tool paths for stainless steel and Inconel alloy powders. Culminated in parameter study to observe depth of heat affected zone and porosity size on cladded coupons. Received hands-on training to program/operate DMU-50 with Siemens controller and NTX1000 with MAPPS. Focused on simultaneous 5-axis motion, 3+2 operations, and NC parameter adjustment. Performed study to quantify accuracy/speed when changing controller parameters R1-R4 and used CMM to measure part error. Show less
