  The company’s primary objectives are • Governor protection and control systems, design, manufacture and commissioning for generators <30MW• MV protection specification, settings, logic design, commissioning and fault analysis • Power system analysis utilizing DIgSILENT software. Clients include local and international. Electrical Engineer I conduct FAT on control and protection panels after panel manufacture. I perform cold commissioning followed by hot commissioning after installation is completed. The main electronic equipment I program, test and commission include Si-TEC governors • Woodward governors and overspeed protection • Micom + Multilin + ABB + Woodward + Sepam IED’s • Basler automatic voltage regulators. Office duties include compilation and checking of electrical schematics and cable schedules • Remote trouble shooting, utilizing ‘time of events’ and ‘disturbance records’ which is a specialty of mine • Managing as built documentation.



Turbine Generator Services (TGS)

  TGS operates throughout Southern Africa mainly in the sugar industry. Their primary forte is repairing, upgrading and installing steam turbines and generators. In 2008 an electrical division was created, to supplement the mechanical division, concentrating on all aspects of generator control and protection, both for upgrades and new machines. Prime movers included steam, diesel and hydro. Electrical Engineer Prior to 2008 TGS outsourced their electrical engineering and commissioning tasks. I joined the company and created the electrical division. I was the sole member and with increased workload the numbers rose to a team of three. Successful project completion was achieved by initial site investigation • Detailed schematic and panel design using AutoCAD • Cable sizing and schedules in Excel • Tender document creation in Word • Panel FAT • cold and hot commissioning • Follow up ‘fine tuning’ or ‘troubleshooting’. Not all projects were power generation related, for example, I was part of an international team, whose responsibility was to ensure good standards and techniques were used in the pre engineering design of a complete sugar mill, designed and priced by a Chinese design institute.

  This is Africa’s biggest sugar producer and has extensive agricultural and manufacturing operations in six African countries. Head Office Electrical Engineer My responsibilities were to project manage electrical aspects of capital upgrade projects, conducted in any 3 of the company’s sugar mills. At Illovo Sugar, project manage meant, feasibility studies • Budgets and approval of • Detailed design • Tender documents and contractor selection • Site supervision and budget management • Commissioning assistance and project handover. A flagship project during my time at Illovo Sugar was a major factory upgrade to Nakambala Sugar mill, in Zambia, were my LV electrical budget was AUS$2.9M.
