VASTS Science and Surface Operations Team Head: Systems Manager
-
Aug 2020 - Aug 2020
The VASTS Summer academy is a seven-day residential program at NASA Langley Research Center (LaRC) in Hampton, VA. Scholars were selected to participate in the Summer Academy program by achieving exemplary grades in the primary VASTS program. Upon selection to go to NASA Langley, scholars apply to be a part of a specific team that is part of the makeup and design of an overall NASA mission (ie. Science and Surface Operations). Upon arrival at NASA Langley, scholars are separated into their selective teams and are introduced to real NASA employees and scientists that work in the field of which the scholar selected. Scholars then apply for positions within their teams with a written application (ie. Head of Science and Surface Operations Head: Systems Manager). Teams are then introduced to the goal that they must work to achieve with real-world technologies and the one for my specific week was transporting a human science team to Mars and back to collect samples and do research to find potential life. The teams then were given brief outlines on what information they needed to provide for their specific sections of the mission and began modeling normal mission design at NASA. I was selected to be the head of the Science and Surface Operations Team and it was my responsibility to manage the overall ongoings of the group while making sure that all members of the team had all the information and resources they needed. I also was in charge of delegating tasks, scheduling meetings with other members of the other mission teams, and making sure that the team stayed on pace. At the end of the project, I presented my team's section of the mission design to a few members of both the Virginia and Federal legislative branches, space industry leaders, and NASA employees. VASTS Scholar

Dec 2019 - Apr 2020
The Virginia Aerospace Science and Technology Scholars (VASTS) program is a NASA partnered interactive online, graded science, technology, engineering, and mathematics program for high school students interested in space. Students who apply and are accepted into this program, on a weekly or bi-weekly basis, are given work consisting of a memorization and a written paper portion. For the memorization portion, students were given information based on a certain Space-Mars topic of the week (ie. EVA Operations) and a math topic of the week (ie. LCROSS Math Calculations), after which they are tested on that information (closed note). For the written paper portion, students were given a topic on which they wrote a fully formatted and cited APA paper on the given topic (ie. Creation of a Lunar Facility). Students were expected to fully research and provide a solution or outlook on a problem, linking it back to real-world application, sustainability, and feasibility. Groups of students were provided access to a professor to ask questions and grade assignments. Overall, this program consisted of a pre-course, 7 different modules, and a final project. All assignments were graded and overall I received a 95.87%, allowing me to get selected for the competitive summer program at NASA Langley Research Facility. Show less
