Upon arriving at the refinery I worked in operations for a bit before having the opportunity to join the Emergency Response Department here at Paulsboro. My responsibilities now include: EMS response, HazMat Technician, Confined Space and Trench Rescue operations, as well as any Fire hazard we may encounter. At the refinery I am responsible for Gas Testing and Hot Work/Confined Space Permits, ensuring the atmosphere in a given area is at breathable and non-explosive limits for workers to enter. Also confirming that any equipment has been locked out and all hazards mitigated prior to the start of work, and that the permit has been completed by all the necessary parties. Show less

In an effort to assist a newer company, and one growing in the Greater Philadelphia Area, I joined CTDI and began supervising installation in the local area. While the scope of my responsibilities were not as great, the amount of installation projects going on at the same time were immense. This was a busy company! I was responsible for meeting deadlines, and handling HR issues at a ground level between employees, ordering materials, and again interfacing with engineers, designers, and installers. This was a great company to work for, and had I not had an opportunity to take on my dream of Emergency Response I would still be there today! Show less

In trying to further my career I moved on from Lucent Technologies to become a supervisor at Tyco Electronics. I was now responsible for more workers, and my responsibility covered a larger area, this could be anywhere in the United States. I worked in Dallas, TX, Northern California, Pittsburgh, etc. I was responsible for managing the ordering and delivering of equipment, maintaining site drawings and updating them, keeping open communications with engineers who designed the layout of how this equipment would be installed, and problem solving for 'real-time' problems. Learned about various types of communications equipment, from fiber optics to infra-red technology. Was the first to help implement what is now the FIOS fiber optic cable system. Installed DC power equipment, regular phone connections, and new cell phone technology at the time. Learned from the ground up how the technology works, and progressed through the company to become a Lead Installer in charge of crews working installation sites around the country. Before moving on in my career I had an opportunity to support recovery operations at the West St. Verizon building, which was involved in the 9/11 disaster. This involved re-routing power and fiber from floors which were destroyed to safer parts of the building, while also maintaining connections so phone service worked for the thousands working and those still living in that area. Responsible for deployment of fuel from offshore tankers to beachfront - then moving fuel from beachheads inland - following supply lines to fuel tanks, aircraft, and motor vehicles. This presented a challenge as we were normally a target for artillery fire.
