The community of Guayabitos, Bolivia located along the Pojo River experiences severe flash floods during the period from November to March. After any severe storm, the Pojo River is likely to flood, resulting in the community being unable to cross the river safely and access the health clinic and school for months each year. In order to solve this problem, our team, working with engineers from Thornton Tomasetti and Engineers in Action designed a pedestrian bridge that can withstand the storms and flooding as well as provide safe access across the river. The designed structure is a suspended pedestrian bridge with concrete abutments and gravity anchors on either side. Other design considerations included mitigating significant erosion on the bank of the river as well as utilizing locally sourced materials. The bridge design was also kept simple enough so the local community can assist in its construction. The pedestrian bridge can provide access to new markets and land that can help stimulate the local economy. Data from previous Engineers in Action projects show that local communities are expected to experience a 30% increase in labor market income and a 75% increase in farm profits.
