Glenelg Psychology Clinic exposed me to large cohorts of clients with severe mental health illnesses. I met clients with Borderline, Narcissistic, Dissociative identity and other Personality Disorders, as well Schizophrenia and the all to common Depression, Trauma and Anxiety. I've learnt to build relationships with the most distrusting people, and feel comfortable sitting with people who have intimidating and violent behaviours. While I am not a psychologist, I have gained both theoretical and practical knowledge in multiple Psychological Therapies, including: Exposure Therapy, Gestalt therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, and some Hypnotherapy and visualisation techniques. As well as therapies, I was able to administer, score, and write reports based on psychological assessments, including: Personality Assessment Inventories, WISC-IV, and WMS-IV I spent a lot of time handling and storing highly confidential data, which speaks to my professionalism and administrative aptitude. In this role I would provide Social Support for the elderly, both in their home and in the community. A typical day involved visiting an elderly participant who was particularly at risk of isolation, typically due to being a widow or severely disabled. We would form a connection, talk about happy memories, cook together, and venture into the community. While at the home, risk assessments would be conducted for case notes to be made. This involved identifying hazards in the home, noticing changes to the participants health, understanding the food and financial reserves of the participant, and doing a mental state check. In the Greek Welfare Centre office, there would also be regular technology workshops, where I faciliated the teaching of basic IT skills for the elderly. This ranged from basic mouse, browser and phone usage, to more complicated processes, like downloading music for personal use, word processing, and using Facebook to increase social connection. I assisted the care team with day trips, joining outings to walking tracks, shopping centres and botanic gardens. In the office, at the end of each week, presenting to management was common, highlighting the weeks events, cases, outcomes and strategic planning for the following week. Show less
