As my job consisted of supporting a large number of students with SEND, my training taught me how best to support these students both in the classroom and during break and lunch times as some students spent time in the Additional Educational Needs (AEN) room which is where I was based. This meant that my role was often to support students who were severely struggling with their mental health or had Special Education Needs that needed to be met consistently both inside and outside of lessons. As a progress assistant, I was allocated a small number of students with SEND and AEN to support and act as their first point of contact. As a result of this, I often worked closely with the safeguarding team as these students made disclosures to me and asked for my help in gaining the right support from their school. Although I supported students from all years through my work in the AEN room, I was attached to a year 7 class with a number of students with SEND and AEN. The support I provided these specific students ranged from supporting a child safely through a seizure and finding alternative communication methods to communicate with a child who was in the process of being diagnosed with ASD and struggled to communicate verbally with other members of staff. I also took on a number of roles outside of my primary work as a progress assistant; officially training and operating as an exam invigilator within the school for both internal and external exams, and acting as an appropriate adult for a number of student interviews with the police as a result of safeguarding issues and bullying. As a result of my role as a specific student’s point of contact, I was also asked by the SENDCO to provide an informal extracurricular lesson with the above mentioned student tailored to her needs as I worked very closely with her and discovered her hobbies and interests as well as her preferred methods of communication.
