I worked with a team of technicians to implement part of a proof-of-concept for a large plant biotechnology project using the latest molecular biology techniques including gene-editing and next-generation sequencing. In 2012 I joined the Greb lab at the Gregor Mendel Institute in Vienna, Austria. In 2013 I won a PLANT FFELLOWS fellowship to continue in the same lab. During my Postdoc I characterized the role of Leucine Rich Repeat Receptor-like Kinases (LRR-RLKs)and their ligands in the regulation of stem cells in the vascular cambium in Arabidopsis. I used various molecular biology techniques, including RNA sequencing and qrt-PCR, as well as histology and confocal microscopy to demonstrate that one particular LRR-RLK called MOL1 is required for homeostasis of cell divisions in the cambium. I designed, performed and analysed the experiments and (co)-wrote the paper describing the results, which is published in The Plant Journal. In addition I presented the results in talks at several international conferences. I was also responsible managing a technician and for mentoring graduate and undergraduate students in the lab, including helping to solve technical and theoretical problems as well as provide guidance on experimental design.
