It is my pleasure to recommend Nhyira K. Annan. I served as Nhyira’s Faculty Internship Research Advisor last summer (2021) at the University of Pittsburgh’s Human Engineering Research Laboratories (HERL). Nhyira was selected among 200+ candidates who applied to our National Science Foundation funded Research Experience for Undergraduate Site American Student Placements in Rehabilitation Engineering (ASPIRE). This is a highly selective 10 week full time internship program engaging engineering and STEM students in a mentored research project including deliverables such as a conference styled paper, poster presentation and 90 second elevator pitch. The summer we worked together was particularly challenging for many students due to the remote nature of the program however I felt Nhyira did a very nice job keeping up with the pace of the work and staying connected with me and the other members of our research team over the course of the internship. I was thoroughly impressed by Nhyira’s commitment to understanding and exploring the insights about rehabilitation engineering and the particular aspects of her project. Nhyira’s project entailed helping our team develop a clinical tool to objectively determine the quality of caregiver assisted wheelchair transfer techniques, in particular, transfers that involve the use of a mechanical lift. She asked many great questions and took the time to dive into what she needed to learn about to get the project done. My early interactions with Nhyira, revealed a well-rounded, intelligent, analytical, and bright individual. Combining her intellect with hard work helped her to excel in her research project. Nhyira’s exceptional attributes and strengths leave no doubt in my mind that she will excel in providing support for future institutions. Nhyira's is able to grasp concepts quickly, has a determination to succeed, and is a hard worker. Nhyira is comfortable with collecting, analyzing, and interpreting data which is an important for any position. Nhyira is inquisitive and eager to contribute. I believe for these reasons she will bring great perspective to her future employer. She will bring interesting points of view to help her team to analyze theories, concepts, and problems during decision-making. Nhyira is introspective and appreciates intellectual discussions. She derives great joy from assisting and collaborating with her teammates. Given Nhyira's strong analytical skills, passion for acquiring knowledge, intellectual curiosity, and ability to work independently and as part of a team, I highly recommend her.
