Douglas Koons

Neil Johnston is a superior artist and gifted painter. We represented him for a number of years at The Douglas-Baker Gallery. Our highest profile sale of his work was to 225 South Sixth Street where five paintings are installed in the entrance lobby at 6th Street and 2nd Avenue South as well as the skyway level Main Lobby. His work is a fitting addition to the architectural expression of I. M. Pei who designed the building.

To know Neil is to know that you can’t be around him without feeling good about him, yourself, wherever you are, and everyone around you. He’s the complete deal. Crazy talented, whippersnapper smart, and a person to depend on to follow through on any endeavor he takes on. Those that work with Neil consider themselves fortunate. Those who are friends of his are even luckier — and he befriends everyone. This endorsement is meant to provide a quick impression on how much I admire and respect Neil (and to help add some color to this LinkedIn profile). But if anyone’s perusing this with any kind of opportunity in mind for Neil, I’d suggest getting on the stick and taking this guy on. Right now. One would regret missing out on a chance to work with Neil. Ask anyone.

    • Studio Artist: Painting
      • May 1990 - Present

A term may be visual artist, but I mostly think of myself as a facilitator - a maker - of ideas. I am immersed in process. The process of making visual as well as musical experiences for people is very similar for me. However, it is my early experience as a commercial billboard painter that fueled my interest in the meaning of images. It was after that 9 year exploration, that I decided to dedicate my life, and studies, to art-making, and teaching. I am fascinated by how people use, manipulate, and communicate through imagery. Now, I keep an active studio, taking painting commissions and working on several bodies of work. Because of my active studio practice, I have an interest in education, exhibitions, collaboration, and curating. I give artist talks about my work, and the topics that I am researching for my works. I see my teaching career as an extension of my studio work.
