The Master has has ultimate responsibility In matters of ship and crew safety, pollution prevention, security, discipline, hygiene and all other general ship matters including cargo distribution, ballast and ship stability, the Master has the overriding authority and responsibility to take whatever actions he considers to be in the best interest of passengers, crew, ship and / or marine environment. The Master also has ultimate responsibility for the execution of all maritime laws, rules and regulations as issued by the authorities of the flag of the vessel, by Classification Society, by I.M.O. Port Authorities and by the vessels owners management.

Deputising for the Master, in the event of his absence on board.The safe navigation of the vessel, during his hours of watch.The safe and efficient running of the Deck Department. Designating duties to additional crew members such as Deck Cadets, Apprentice Deckhands and Supernumeraries, as and when applicable.Maintenance of all marine safety equipment.Loading potable water, as per requirements.Coordinating on board fire fighting response, and overseeing all internal fire fighting activities on board, as and when required.Carrying out vessel inspections according to Safety Inspection , and reporting any / all recorded defects to Chief Engineer.Liaise with ship's staff regarding defects to be raised.Liaising with ship's staff and Vessel Superintendent regarding defect status.Ensuring that all wires and shackles etc. are properly certified and in date, and that they are not used beyond their S.W.L. The Chief Mate must also ensure that they are correctly registered in the lifting register or cargo securing manual, whichever is applicable.Carrying out 6 monthly lifting equipment checks and for keeping relevant coding up to date and correct.Monitoring safe working practices of shore contractors during periods of maintenance.Ensuring a safe working environment by adhering to and policing the company's safe systems of work, including permit to work.Supervising the safe and efficient loading / unloading and sea fastening of any deck cargoes carried, when applicable.Emergency training of all personnel on board in the use of L.S.A. equipment.Supervising the approved planned maintenance of all load line and L.S.A. equipment on board.Monitoring the vessel's L.S.A. and fire fighting appliances and for carrying out tests of the Fire Detection System.
