I have worked mainly with poultry since 1979. Since 1984 my career in New Zealand has covered frontline involvement with most of the major animal health issues that have confronted the New Zealand poultry industry - the arrival and control of virulent Mareks disease, Salmonella, Egg Drop Syndrome and IBDI am an evaluator of Risk Management programmes for NZ Food Safety Authority. I have undertaken Animal Welfare visits to farms in conjunction with MAF staff, mainly following public complaints. In 2007, together with AsureQuality, I won the contract to carry out the welfare audit required for review of the NZ Layer Hen Welfare Code promulgated in 1995.As a specialist in poultry medicine, I am contacted by veterinarians (in private practice, MAF and industry) from for assistance with avian disease problems in poultry and other birds. I have been a frequent visitor to the Pacific Islands, since becoming veterinary consultant to Crest Chickens and Vuda Piggery in 2002. and Rooster Poultry in Ba, and Ram Sami in Suva, This has alerted me to some of the peculiarities of viral strains, especially relating to the control of IBD in Fiji. The work has brought me into contact with smallholder farmers as well as larger producers. I have recently been heavily involved in re-drafting Animal Import Certificates to facilitate the importation of ducks to Fiji.My work at Vuda Piggeries ncluded the serology associated with the expansion of this facility, which is the most comprehensive serological work up on a PICT piggery in recent years ( HOVAPS 2005).I have also do work for Toa Enterprises, Port Vila i, and Nuigini Tablebirds, MAF consultationMember of Biosecurity New Zealand's Stakeholder Advisory Committee on Avian Influenza.Regularly consulted regarding possible disease issues by staff at IDC
