  At Kumon, students come in and are given assignment sheets that they then work through as best they can. The role of the Kumon instructor is both to teach them new concepts as well as help them work through problems they are struggling with. Each assignment sheet is graded and over time, with the help of the instructor, the student moves up the levels, receiving more difficult assignments as they do.
