I had the distinct honour of inviting Nate to be a guest lecturer in our "Designing with the Planet" unit at the AA Visiting School. His session was a journey of enlightenment that interwove disciplines and perspectives, epitomising the power of a transdisciplinary approach to tackling the problems and opportunities that matter most. Nathan's eloquent delivery and profound insights resonated far beyond academia, kindling a consciousness about our collective responsibility towards a sustainable future. What stood out was his practical insights into the post-growth economy, a concept often seen as abstract and unapproachable. Nathan demystified this subject, equipping our students with a tangible understanding of how, what we design can significantly influence not just our current economy, but also its long-term sustainability. His teachings were both pedagogical and philosophical, instilling in the students an appreciation for the ripple effects of their design decisions. He inspired them to envisage their roles as designers of our planet's destiny, emphasising that the impacts of their creations extend beyond the present, influencing future generations and the greater ecosystems we inhabit. Nathan's contributions have left an indelible mark on our course, transforming our students' perspectives and nurturing their growth as mindful designers. His unique blend of passion, expertise, and wisdom, combined with his practical teaching style, make him an invaluable asset to any educational initiative. I am immensely grateful for Nathan's transformative presence in our program, and I am eager for the potential of future collaborations. If you're seeking an engaging speaker who can challenge traditional paradigms and inspire the next generation of change-makers, I wholeheartedly recommend Nate.

Nate brings an equal amount of intellect, energy and passion to his work. He is a skilled collaborator and brings a wealth of tools and experience to to the table. His expertise on trust and data ethics is robust, and his application of those complex topics is nimble. I always enjoy working with Nate and learning from him. He challenges the status quo which and compels us all to do better.

Jul 2022 - Dec 2022
In this role I led work to explore the nuanced dynamics of end-to-end agricultural supply chains from a sociotechnical perspective. The goal of this work was to enhance the verifiable trustworthiness of Australia’s approach to agricultural traceability.During this time I delivered collaborative research with CSIRO, supported leadership and team development, produced formal evidence-based proposals for systems interventions and worked on a bunch of other exciting stuff that I hope to experience out in the real world some day. I led the development of an ethical decision-making framework that supported the firms key activities from sourcing, due diligence, capital deployment and portfolio support through to (if / where necessary) divestment. Given the nature of the investment thesis, my advisory work (outside of tool and framework development) focused on the sociotechnical challenges and opportunties of alternative proteins, specifically in relation to assessments of trust(worthiness) and the impact on consumer adoption / other market dynamics. Impact Investor and Startup Advisor

Sep 2016 - Jun 2021
*Not currently investing (paused in 2021). Other focuses in life. Hope to come back to this in the future. I do, however, continue supporting a few of my portfolio companies. 75 small investments (split of direct angel, SPV and ECF) across food/ag, energy, financial services, privacy enhancing tech and a few related 'impact' areas. TVPI 6.4x (as of June 2022). Basic thesis: I'm driven by the 'hope' that the companies of tomorrow will work to enhance our ("our" in a truly holistic sense) collective wellbeing through regenerative practices. Because of this explicit focus, and other intentional practices, these are the companies that will be most worthy of our trust (and benefit from positive trust states). I invest in smart people super early. I work to validate that the problem space is significant, highly valued and under-served by the market today (the 'sweet spot' for a problem worth solving). I spread risk across problem spaces, industry verticals and geographies. I only invest what I can justifiably lose. Impact is the focus. Upside is the complement. Show less

Preventable injury in sport is a huge issue. I suffered through it from the age of 15. It meant I couldn't fulfil my dream of becoming a professional athlete. Sport Performance Accelerator, an angel backed SaaS startup, set out to tackle this problem by delivering privacy enhancing, athlete-centric performance, management and injury prediction tools to professional sporting teams. I led the company through its initial investment from the UK, drove product and customer development, built our core team and progressed execution of the business model. Cutting a long and nuanced story short, I made a bunch of mistakes, particularly around hiring and our cap table. We ended up returning funds to investors and closing up shop... Not exactly the 'dream exit'. At the time, this was by far my greatest, and steepest learning experience. It was also the 'trigger' that encouraged me to dive far more deeply into the field (which is still hard to 'define') I've since dedicated my career to. Show less
