Brooke Charter Schools is a nonprofit public Commonwealth Charter School system serving the students of Boston, MA. During my tenure at Brooke, we operated three K-8 (elementary and middle) schools across campuses in Roslindale, East Boston, Dorchester, Roxbury, and Mattapan. While Brooke is best known for the MCAS results of its students, who generally score at the very top of the state rankings, it is distinguished in the education community for its renowned teacher training and professional development programs and for its commitment to offering young Boston scholars access to a full curriculum of languages, math, social studies, science, art, music, and dance. It is a very well-run institution and it was my privilege to work with such excellent teachers, administrators, and kids.At Brooke, I supported approximately 150 staff members and over a thousand students by managing three work-streams:1. I worked with school and network leaders to identify important data across the organization and improve the collection, storage, analysis, and disbursal thereof. 2. I designed and administered our academic assessment system, using VBA to automate the distribution and analysis of scoring spreadsheets to teachers and deliver granular and summarized results back to our principals and teachers within minutes.3. I built Excel models and analysis tools for staff members across all departments and supported ad hoc analytic projects ranging from the expense outlay prediction for a compensation system redesign to a custom database for the Office of High School and College Success to track the academic paths of our alumni. While at Brooke, I also ran the after-school music program in Roslindale with Mr. Carey and spent a thrilling after-lunch recess supervising 60 of the best first-graders I've ever met four days each week.

During and after my fellowship with Education Pioneers, I also contracted with them on two projects: evaluating the Excel exercises submitted by applicants, and teaching Excel skills.Over two application seasons, I evaluated several hundred applicants on their ability to use Excel to model finances and to analyze educational data, a key component of the application process. For the 2012-2013 Analyst Fellowship, I partnered with a team from Harvard's Strategic Data Project to lead a session for 60 incoming fellows on analyzing educational data in Excel. For the 2013-2014 and 2013-2014 seasons, I led regular sessions of "Educational Data Analysis in Microsoft Excel for Education Managers", a course directed at alumni of our graduate school fellowship seeking greater facility in analysis. I covered everything from 'what is Excel' to programming in VBA.

Analyst Fellow
-
Aug 2011 - Jun 2012
The Analyst Fellowship at Education Pioneers is a competitive program (1.6% acceptance rate for my year) that provides a career pipeline from analytically-intense jobs in the private sector, predominantly consulting and finance, into the public education sector. Education Pioneers also runs a graduate school fellowship, and it's goal is to make education the best-managed sector of the US economy. My cohort of 10 fellows was placed into education nonprofits, charter schools, Boston Public Schools, and New York Public Schools for the ten months of the program.. In addition to the projects at our placements, we gathered for monthly workshops designed to improve our subject-matter expertise, program evaluation and strategy skills, public speaking, and professional network. As a final component to the fellowship, we created and piloted an enrichment program based around using entrepreneurship to develop basic math and literacy skills for students at a BPS middle school in Dorchester.

Citizen Schools is a nonprofit organization that partners with public middle schools in low-income areas around the country to extend the learning day. Community members, AmeriCorps fellows, and aspiring educators work together to bring ten week long projects to the students, culminating in powerful final products and presentations that the students can show to their communities. I was placed with Citizen Schools for my fellowship with Education Pioneers, but I was also community volunteer, leading workshops on writing comic books and building musical instruments in 2009 and 2010.While at Citizen Schools, I worked with the Technology and the Finance teams in our national office on our knowledge management systems and our annual planning process. I also supported other departments on an ad hoc basis whenever more complex analysis or Excel modeling was required. Once each week, I continued leading projects in musical instrument manufacturing for sixth graders at the Edwards Middle School, a Citizen Schools partner in the Charlestown neighborhood of Boston.
