Specialist Community Public Health Nurse (Health Visitor)
-
Sep 2012 - Oct 2015
In my role of health visitor I worked with children from birth to five years old, and their families. This was an extremely varied role, which required me to work in variety of settings and with a wide variety of people, both clients and other professionals. As part of my role I was able to prescribe medications (from a limited formulary) to infants and children attending the health visitor led well baby clinics and development clinic. The public health training, which I undertook as part of my health visitor training, enabled me to assess the health needs of individuals, families and the wider community to promote good health and prevent illness. The focus of my role was to ensure that all of the children in the geographical area where I worked had the best start in life. To achieve this I worked in partnership with parents and families to assess: parenting skills, the family and home situation and developmental needs of young children. Working collaboratively with families I offered support where needed and empowered them to find their own solutions to problems where appropriate. Another very important aspect of my role was to work with other organisations to safeguard and protect the children on our caseload. I am trained to recognise the risk factors, triggers of concern, and signs of abuse and neglect in children. In situations where I recognised a child was at risk of harm, I would follow the local safeguarding policies to ensure that the appropriate action needed was taken. I would then continue to ensure that families received the best possible support during formal safeguarding arrangements. Show less

Paediatric Nurse
-
Feb 2010 - Sep 2012
I worked as children's nurse on a general medical ward at a specialist children's hospital. I gained experience of looking after children from birth to 16 with a wide range of general medical conditions such as viral and bacterial infections as well as long-term conditions including asthma, diabetes, epilepsy, cystic fibrosis and Crohn's disease. I also gained experience of looking after children with multiple and complex medical and care needs. In my role I had to assess, plan, implement and evaluate the care of my patients, prioritising care and accurately and contemporaneously completing documentation in accordance with the local policies. I was able to effectively communicate any concerns that I might have about my patients to senior staff and other relevant members of the multidisciplinary team. I was able to complete a holistic assessment of the needs of not only my patients but also their family and I always ensured that I communicated effectively with a patient's family to ensure that they understood the plan of care and felt supported. This included delivering training to parents/carers so that they could competently give any required medical treatment once a patient was discharged home. Other aspects of my role included: being a buddy for student nurses. being the link pain nurse and link infection control nurse. This required me to conduct audits on the ward to help ensure that the highest standard of care was maintained in terms of these two areas. participating in health promotion and health education activities where relevant for example helping patients to make healthy choices in terms of their diet during their hospital stay.
