Construction Intern
-
Mar 2011 - Jun 2011
The internship duties were split into three segments throughout the 11 week span. First, I was sent to work on a Habitat rebuild located on 1120 Whittier St. Columbus OH, 43206. There, I assisted House Leader, John Fisher. We framed a two story addition to the rear of the house, repaired existing framing inside the house, and built a full-width porch on the front. I did safety audits, and site inspections daily. I got to lead safety talks with the volunteers and take small groups of them to do an assigned task. Three weeks later, I was relocated to the HFHCG office to help with inventory, do quantity take-offs, deliver materials, and complete warrantee tasks with the Construction Operations Manager, David Moore. We cleaned the material room and did a complete update of the inventory, which hadn’t been done for over 6 months. Part three of the internship involved new houses on Pierce Ave and Erickson Ave in Whitehall (43212). Duties there included framing, roofing, siding, and drywall. I got to work with a group of volunteers from a group called Thrivent Financial. They had plenty of construction experience, many of them on their 5th or 6th habitat house. I learned more from them than they did from me, which was an excellent experience. Show less
