As a College and Career Readiness Specialist I have built close relationships with students by mentoring opportunities and fostering relationships to assist with retention. While building these relationships, I tap into the issue at hand helping students problem solve by focusing on their short-term and long-term goals. These goals are focused on specific career or attending both 2-year and 4-year institutions of higher learning. We build up the whole student through, mock interviews, public speaking practice, dual-enrollment opportunities, and polishing resumes. In this role I teach the Business Communications Course portion of the Hospitality Pathways Course (the Career and Technical Course Requirement for graduation). I've woven into the existing curriculum real life scenarios that have included hurdles to overcome that include thinking about the employment landscape that has been changed by COVID-19. Also, the curriculum includes aspects of financial literacy and responsibility by creating a personal budget, analyzing credit scores and debts, comparing credit scores with loan percentage rates by having dialogue about how interest rates impact payments over time. I teach basic terms in finance, accounting, and economics and show students how to analyze stocks in the financial markets by looking at the news and how it impacts specific sectors of the marketplace.
