• Working at Vail as a ski instructor, teaching beginner to advanced ski lessons to children and adults. I moved here right after college and was terrible at skiing. Vail pushed my technical abilities to an entirely different level, and it fostered my passion for being in the outdoors, seeking adrenaline, and learning about new cultures. During a 6 month exchange program where I studied at the University of Amsterdam, I founded and ran a small tour company. I was a freelance tour guide giving tours exclusively for Sandeman's New Amsterdam. I gave 3.5 hour walking tours through the city and a 2 hour biking tour.Keeping groups of up to 30 tourists engaged and interested about the tour was the fundamental core of the tours. We went all through the central part of Amsterdam on the walking tour and explored a little farther out in the biking tour. There were many variables during the tours that would always require flexibility and impromptu decisions that would make every tour different from the other. Many times the tourists did not speak English as a primary language, so speaking clearly and understandably while maintaining the attention of native English speakers was very important.During the tours I would promote and sell additional tour events, such as pub crawls, a red light district tour, and a coffee shop tour. During my short stay in Amsterdam, I had one of the highest ratings and return rates of all the tour guides contracting with Sandeman's New Amsterdam. I was also the 'go to' guy for any bike tours, with a very high reputation for giving the most fun, engaging and rowdy tour on wheels in Amsterdam.This part of my life completely changed my perspective on who I am as a person and what I wanted to do with my career. Owning a business and living in Europe after being a small-town Minnesota kid showed me that the world is chock-full of opportunities and people with a different take on life.
