      I began working in Dr. Don Sodora's lab before my PhD rotation with him in fall 2018, investigating the role of Nontuberculous Mycobacteria in the liver pathogenesis of SIV-infected rhesus macaques receiving combined Anti-Retroviral Therapy. I have learned BSL2+ protocol, hepatocyte culture, intracellular bacterial replication assays, and correspondent media and agar preparation. I designed an infection model that could provide in-vitro verification for exciting ex-vivo findings.       As a NIH PREP fellow, I worked in Dr. Thomas Hawn's lab, investigating host-directed therapies (HDTs) to Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb). HDTs could act as an adjuvant to direct antibiotics, decreasing the risk of antibiotic resistance and lung pathology. Using a luminescence-based intracellular bacterial replication assay, we found a group of kinase inhibitors that inhibit Mtb replication in macrophages. I investigated possible mechanisms by which the compounds could be enhancing macrophage control of infection by determining the effects of the kinase inhibitors on known macrophage clearance pathways, learning and utilizing skills such as ELISA, Western blotting, siRNA knockdown, fluorescence microscopy, and RNA analysis including RT-PCR and Fluidigm.       Using cell & molecular techniques and a focused understanding of particular biochemical pathways, my PI Dr. Zhengchang Liu and I discovered a transcriptional regulator of mitochondrial biogenesis activator HAP4 in budding yeast. We are currently in the process of writing and editing the manuscript for journal submission. I will also be included as an author on a manuscript in preparation detailing our findings on a regulator of Haa1, a transcription factor involved in responding to acid stress in yeast. This research was made possible through my acceptance to the College of Science's Undergraduate Research Program (COSURP) and the Privateer Undergraduate Research and Scholarly UNO Experience (PURSUE) during the semester as well as an NIH grant for full-time work over the winter break.       As an assistant instructor to Dr. Mary Clancy and tutor for sophomore-level Cell and Molecular Biology Lab, I guided students in pipetting technique and procedures such as PCR and yeast transformation, offering explanations for the fundamental principles of biology that (hopefully) allowed them to fully understand the experiments they did. I graded their weekly lab reports and two exams, providing feedback and personal counseling. I learned through this experience that I have an immense passion for teaching and outreach. Show less

      I was ecstatic to be accepted into the New Orleans Regional Collaborative (NORC) for STEM Retention summer experience into Dr. Nicola Anthony's lab, where I learned to pipette, was introduced to the field of research as a whole, and to bioinformatics and molecular ecology. I designed a protocol for amplifying DNA without a reference genome to identify genes under selection in various species that represent the biodiversity of the West Congo Basin. Using this protocol and geographical collection data, candidate genes will be identified and mapped in order to make informed conservation decisions. Show less

      I worked in Dr. Russell Vance's lab as an HHMI EXceptional Research Opportunities Program (EXROP) summer fellow. I investigated the interaction of Salmonella and the innate immune system in order to understand how the innate immune system has constrained pathogen evolution. By analyzing the effect of specific mutagenesis of Salmonella protein FliC on both immune recognition and pathogen success, we gained insight on the strategy that Pattern Recognition Receptors (PRRs) utilize to recognize Pathogen Associated Molecular Patterns (PAMPs) undergoing rapid evolutionary changes.
