At Children's Integrated Services I have the privilege of accompanying a fantastic group of social workers on home visits and daycare visits to watch them evaluate and work with children of ages 0 to 3 who are impacted by a wide variety of cognitive and/ or physical developmental delays. I also observe occupational therapists work on different techniques with these children to help them improve in the skills which they lack. As an intern for the Forman school Rain forest project, I took on the role of a student mentor/ member of the Spider Silk Team. The entire team consisting of, the bird team, mammal team, bio-acoustics, spider silk team, and reptile/amphibian team, traveled to Costa Rica in the spring of 2017. The spider silk team studied the tensile strength of silk produced by the Nephila Clavipes, whose common name is Golden Orb Weaver. My team and I ran a tensile lab in two different reserves, ten miles into the Costa Rican rainforest outside of a town named Horquetes, where we sampled the silk of the Nephilas to contribute data for analysis of its potential material use in medical products. Potential uses include material in medical rubber gloves, suturing, tendons and ligament repairs, etc. Our research findings were presented at our dissertation the following May.
