  I am investigating the muscle-intrinsic defects in satellite stem cell proliferation and self-renewal in spinal muscular atrophy (SMA). This work has allowed me to learn several new molecular and in vitro methods, and I am excited to apply them to develop an arm of the lab’s investigation of SMA.   My PhD project brought muscle regeneration studies into a design that examined the progressive repair of muscle together with the re-establishment of muscle-fiber innervation. I planned experiments that could establish the timing of reinnervation processes in skeletal muscle regenerating from an injury, and then examined the impact of activating satellite cells before an injury. Treatment to induce premature activation accelerated muscle repair and significantly delayed the restoration of nerve-muscle connections at NMJs on new muscle fibers. Show less
