      The State Board of Education oversees the adoption and implementation of K-12 academic standards, such as the Common Core. It also adopts instructional materials for K-8. The Legislature handed the board the job of setting rules for implementing the Local Control Funding Formula. The governor appoints 10 of its 11 members to four-year terms and the board annually appoints an 11th voting member, a high school student. Naomi was a full time voting member who represented the 6 million students in California voting on policies topping $1.8 billion. Researching and drafting a proposal to mandate a statewide election day to decrease barriers to voter turnout. This proposal will be submitted to the Youth Advisory Council in January 2023 where it will undergo discussion and debate from 24 fellow advisors. Our work will culminate in a Youth Town Hall in Spring 2023 with refined proposals.
