Research Associate
-
Feb 2021 - Dec 2021
- Research associate on the streaming data project sponsored by the Alan Turing Institute. - Investigated a discrete-time parameterisation of the multivariate Ornstein-Uhlenbeck (MOU) process. - Developed sparse Bayesian models for an MOU process and implemented them in the statistical software R and the probabilistic programming language Stan.- Compared the efficiency of different samplers for the models through an extensive simulation study. - Paper (accepted for March 2023 issue) in Computational Statistics & Data Analysis on some of my PhD work in the area of time-series metagenomics (see below). - Fully funded place in EPSRC's CDT in Cloud Computing for Big Data (CCBD).- Project Title: Complex Models for Genetic Sequence Data.- Project Summary: Developed more biologically realistic Bayesian models for genetic sequence data in two application areas: phylogenetics and time series metagenomics.Achievements: - Contributed to an extensive Java package that fits phylogenetic models.- Parallelised key calculations, resulting in substantial computational speed-up.- Incorporated more biological realism into phylogenetic models and performed analyses on real data sets (DNA alignments from 16S genes).- Developed a Bayesian hierarchical VAR(1) model for weekly bacterial counts from a wastewater treatment plant that also incorporates chemical and environmental variables.- Presented my work to a variety of audiences (e.g. fellow academics and industry partners from non-technical backgrounds) using posters and presentation software.Publications and Talks:- Phylogenetics paper in the 4* journal, Annals of Applied Statistics (December 2020).- Phylogenetics poster at an international conference (ISBA 2018). - Metagenomics talk at a J & J workshop, Microbial Population Dynamics and Time Series: Methods, Experiments and Data, Ghent University, Belgium (November 2018). Workshop Leader
-
Dec 2017 - Dec 2019
- Taught a series of R workshops covering introductory material, statistical modelling (for example, hypothesis testing) and programming skills to postgraduate students from non-statistical backgrounds.- Workshops comprised lectures using presentations, interactive quizzes, live code demonstration, and practicals, which reinforced participants' understanding. - Advised workshop attendees on how to address their own statistical problems related to their research.

- Worked in the fouling control Research & Development team on a project investigating how biofilm on the bottom of ships affects drag penalty. - Improved experimental design, automated experimental data processing and taught a series of R workshops to up-skill the existing team and, ultimately, build internal data analysis capabilities. - Created a model for drag penalty and provided useful numerical and graphical summaries of the data.
