I was the co-editor of an academic book, 'Discourse Analysis and Austerity' recently published by Routledge. Naoise contributed to the book and we worked together on the project for a period of well over a year all in all. Naoise's contribution was of an excellent standard both in terms of the quality of writing and the intellectual ideas which he introduced. He is clearly a deep thinker who is able to communicate his ideas well. Naoise was also reliable and very pleasant to communicate with. It was a pleasure working with him, and I do very much hope to have the opportunity to collaborate with him again in the near future.

I was Naoise McDonagh's direct supervisor when he worked as Graduate Teaching Assistant (GTA) for "Issues and Themes in Sociology" (SOCIOL 100) at the University of Auckland in 2018. Having Naoise on board the teaching team was essentially like having a second lecturer on staff. Naoise knows his sociology like the back of his hand, but more importantly he can convey sociological concepts and broader theories in ways that are both understandable and meaningful. To this end, Naoise was invaluable to students. Additionally, Naoise was able to give advice to fellow GTA's on our team. I have no doubt Naoise is ready to teach multiple university courses on his own, in sociology and related disciplines.

      - Organizational vision and leadership - Strategic planning - Public engagement - Stakeholder engagement - Chair of the council The role of the institute is to promote public understanding of international affairs in all their complexity. Today that objective is more critical than ever. The last three decades have seen the extent and criticality of connections between nation states multiply and deepen such that each nation’s well-being is in part dependent on its relations to many more. Likewise, this proliferation of connectivity and interdependence pose vulnerabilities and risks, the nature of which have emerged in recent years. In that context, it is crucial to have informed and balanced debate on the international issues of our time; to avoid both reactionary and ill-informed responses to the affairs of the day. It is with great passion that I aim to achieve that objective as President of the Institute here in Adelaide, South Australia!

PhD CandidateThesis: The End of Capitalism, Again? An institutional-evolutionary view.Abstract: Within critical political economy the 2008 Global Financial Crisis is viewed a symptom of a deeper structural decline. This ‘capitalism is ending’ argument is derived from analysis focused on the developmental contradictions of the capitalist system. This thesis shows the flaws in that approach by highlighting how institutional regulation plays a central role in managing capitalist development, and thus adequate analysis must include contradictions and ameliorative institutional regulation. Conceptually, I use institutional-evolutionary theory to critically assess the limitations of key arguments in the debate on capitalism’s future. Institutional-evolutionary theory is based on a contemporary revival of Thorstein Veblen’s work. I argue the theory contains the resources for investigating the historical specificity of capitalism. Following critique of existing debates on the future of capitalism, I develop a representative case study highlighting the dynamic between capitalist contradictions and ameliorative institutional regulation, through a historical study of the evolution of bank bailout policy since the 18th century. This policy was crucial to avert systemic risk in 2008, as well as in many previous crises. In this thesis, I argue that the global diffusion of bailout policy is a case of institutional evolution driven by a process of variation, selection, and retention of institutions.
