I work in pre-analytical haematology where specimens are labelled and booked on to the Laboratory Information System (LIS) in both Haematology and Blood Transfusion (BT) departments. In Haematology, I participate in the use and maintenance of the Sysmex XE FBC Analysers, ESR Starrsed Compact ESR Analyser, Sysmex SP1000 Automated Blood Film Maker and Stainer, TS1000 Tube Sorter and CS 51000 coagulation machine. Within in BT, I undertake routine cleaning and maintenance of laboratory equipment such as the waterbaths, centrifuges and the Ortho AutoVue™ Innova automated blood group analysers and benches. I also run samples on the analysers to determine the patients’ blood group. In Haematology, I rotate into the specialist departments, such as; Flow Cytometry and Haemostasis. I also, book in specimens as well as sending off specimens to different sites for appropriate tests. Within Haemostasis, I run tests such as PFA-100 and Plasma Viscosity. Additionally, I prepare and perform bone marrow either manually or on the RAL Stainer, blood smears and CSF slides for the doctors and BMSs. This demonstrates that I handle, use and dispose of blood (and other body fluids or tissues) and hazardous chemicals in a safe manner as according to COSHH. In addition, I process the lymphocyte subsets and CD19s either manually or on the Aquios and then run them on the Beckman Coulter Navios analysers, which are flow cytometers. Furthermore, I am able to start-up and load samples on the BioRad Variant analyser in Special Haemostasis, which is a HPLC. Working in Haematology, I am able to use the different softwares required such as; Winipath, CDR, Carecast, HILIS and Blood Track Manager according to local Standard Operating Procedure. I would input data into the LIS abiding by the trust policy on data protection. Show less
