Staff Officer post at HQ North West responsible for driving the Army's commitment to engagment with civil communities in the North West region. The particular focus is developing a Coaching and Mentoring work-based learning project in partnership with UCLAN. The Masters level module prepares Regular and Reserve personnel to be coaches/mentors in Schools, Academies and University Technical Colleges (UTCs) which have cadet units (CCFs and ACFs) as part of the national Cadet Expansion Programme. Additionally I chair the Army's NW Regional Development Board, shortlisting bids to support the Armed Forces Covenant, a significant proportion of which are concerned with developing qualifications to upskill Army veterans. Part of my role involves support following regional catastrophic events such as flooding, and this has led to the development of a Masters level module in National Resilience. Show less

    • Deputy-Vice Chancellor for Student Success
      • 2013 - 2015

I joined MMU with the task of reversing the decline in MMU's position in the league tables. By the time I left, MMU had increased its NSS scores, with student satisfaction across all Departments between 85 and 100%, and with significantly improved progression, retention and employability. After only 2 years, MMU’s league table position moved from the bottom to the middle of the league tables, and all QAA outcomes were excellent. MMU had no international strategy when I joined so I developed an institution-wide strategy focussing initially on China and India, later Sri Lanka and Malaysia. Achievements: Recruited and established an MMU International Office; developed partnerships with agents, HEIs and others; increased international student recruitment; increased international research partnerships; introduced internationalisation into the curriculum for all 8 Faculties. I had direct academic and managerial responsibility for four of MMU's eight Faculties comprising over a 1,000 staff and almost 20,000 students on three campuses with combined budgets of approaching £100million. Achievements: Improved academic outcomes through restructured provision, rebalanced resources to support success and closure of underperforming courses; embedded employability, enterprise, internationalisation and sustainability in all curricula to reinforce emphasis on student success; introduced problem- and work-based learning into the curriculum where academically possible and especially to support future employability; introduced volunteering and reach-out activity to support student employability. • 2008 - 2013

Following a change of VC in 2008 the university restructured and Faculties replaced the previous semi-autonomous Campus structure. My PVC (External) portfolio was focused on pan-university strategic leadership. I developed the International Strategy and drove implementation across all Faculties; international recruitment and research activity increased very significantly; campuses established in Uzbekistan, Sri Lanka and Paris doubled in size. I also developed the External Engagement Strategy and the Corporate Social Responsibility Strategy and led implementation with the result that we became a sector leader in this area. I led on equal opportunities and fair access for students and staff. I managed Marketing, Communications and Development, improving recruitment and fund raising. On the academic side, I managed considerable change in academic areas and worked across all Faculties. Key successes were in restructuring the Schools of Electronic Engineering and Computing, merging two schools onto one site, improving performance and eliminating their deficit. Knowledge Transfer Partnerships increased from 1 to 15 in 12 months with significant research gains and partnership development. I introduced employability skills through curriculum development as a key part of the strategy to improve progression, retention and employability KPIs. I also took responsibility for relations with the Students Union. Show less

As Principal of Digby Stuart College, I provided strategic leadership and steered the College through major changes; created a strong College identity and community with an international network; developed the College estate, including the funding and addition of two major new buildings. As Pro-Rector I had strategic responsibility for promoting a university-wide entrepreneurial culture by developing research and innovation, by improving external engagement with businesses and the local community, by developing a culture of bidding for external funding and, by improving student employability. I also line managed 3 Academic Schools and was closely involved with the academic direction of the whole institution. The strategic planning and restructuring required to de-federalise from the University of Surrey and achieve independent university status required major policy, legal and structural changes taking proper account of the interests of the four College’s governing bodies and other diverse stakeholders. Achievements: helped to create Roehampton University as an independent university; significantly improved external engagement and income generation; improved the student experience and student employability; added two major new buildings.
