To Whom it May Concern: I have known Myles Grant for about six years, first, as an energetic and bright freshman who came into the College and Career Center (CCC) expressing his desire to attend college and then as the CCC Peer Advisor during his 10th, 11th, and 12th grades at Pittsburg High School. Pittsburg High School can be a difficult place for some scholars as it is situated in an area wrought with gangs, drug dealers and violence. Myles has seen a number of scary episodes in his tenure here and he realized that a place like this can swallow you up if you are not careful to avoid the drama. But being a natural-born leader, Myles focused his time and attention on academics and the positive activities that he enjoyed and knew would bring him the future that he desired. He was a dedicated football and baseball player. His versatility and ability to adapt in tough situations is the hallmark of his success in the classroom as well as on the court. Myles is dedicated to his community and completed over 500 hours of community service as a PHS student while being an Academic Achiever every year at PHS maintaining a 3.4 GPA. I knew Myles would continue to set high goals for himself and he did that from the minute he set foot on the campus of Alabama State University. He currently serves as a mentor by being a Resident Assistant. Myles has also founded the Student Safety Task Force which is an organization providing safety for Alabama State University students when walking on campus. All this while maintaining a 3.4-grade point average. While a lot of students leave high school and never look back, Myles continues to mentor current students at PHS and is the coordinator of a college panel, and comes back to speak with students about the importance of attending HBCUs. While working a full-time job this past summer (May 2020-August 2020) Myles was able to still find time to give back to his community by helping students with the college application process via Zoom. Myles dedicated over 75 hours by helping students with their college application, explaining the FASFA process and helping with academic resumes. But his dedication and support of further education did not stop there, during the Christmas break last year he facilitated daily workshops for the senior class to apply for scholarships. Myles’ tough-minded, no-nonsense approach to meeting his responsibilities demonstrates the tenacity, perseverance and personal strength it will take for him to be successful in today’s world.
