Design of next generation machines and the associated manufacturing technologies need to be continuously and systematically investigated particularly in the context of high precision sustainable manufacturing. The project aims to give you the opportunity to research and speculate on the formulation and development of novel and innovative ideas and approaches for design of new/next generation machines and the associated sustainable machining technologies and processes. The design will cover the entire machine, i.e. including the mechanical, electrical and control systems. Possible aspects addressed, within this scope, include but are not limited to: • Novel and innovative design of the machine configuration and structure • Eco-design of the machine (addressing the issues related to using new materials, eco-configuration, resource utilization, wastes, reuse, etc) • Novel design of drive systems including slideways, spindles and actuators, etc. • Machine and in-process monitoring and inspection including sensors, devices and the system integration, etc. • Machining strategies and algorithms addressing energy consumption and carbon footprint in processes • Innovative tooling and fixture design and characterization, and their integration with the machine • New methods and approaches for machine system integration • New methods and approaches for machine performance assessment • Work will be lead by Prof K Cheng, Mustafa Mahey and people from the company Show less
