Field qualitative research on the present condition and the Rehabilitation of sex workers in the red light areas of Mumbai. The research found that 1. With the guidance and monitoring of local sex worker activists, the number of trafficking victims have reduced in some of the areas while others still have minors trafficked into prostitution. 2. While some sex workers, primarily ones in the age bracket of 18 to 30 can not afford the luxury of choice to be rehabilitated because they must earn and pay the amount they were bought in to their pimps, the rehabilitation of those who wish to be rehabilitated (in the age bracket of 40 to 55) becomes more difficult because of the lack of their identification documents, social stigma and their unemployability in other areas of work.
