Provided support to patients who suffered a stroke or other brain-injury. I helped my supervisor assess and identify problems and learnt to explain these to the patient, ensuring that they understand. From the problem-list, I would help the patient in goal-setting and prescribe treatments to help them achieve their goals (with my supervisor and the patient’s family/carer). If there weren’t any appointments, I assisted my supervisor with business admin. and marketing, we also made a plan to create a small stroke charity with some of the patients. Show less

My duties here included reception work, being responsible for answering telephone-calls and responding to any inquiries; organising appointments and referrals; and liaising with the physiotherapists and their clients to deliver messages, for example. My goal is to be trained to a level where I am able to provide greater assistance with the treatment and management of patients. For example, I am currently practicing using ultra-sound treatment and I also set up the equipment for the physiotherapist, such as the Shortwave Diathermy machine. Show less

I shadowed physiotherapists covering, Outpatients, Neurology, Older Adults Mental Health, Stroke, Respiratory and Orthopaedic. I found this day exciting because I had not been in a busy clinical environment such as this before. Many of the cases observed in the Orthopaedic and Outpatient wards were familiar from my previous experience. Of particular note here, was the importance of timely management of elderly patients recovering from hip replacement operations and the need to assist and promote their recovery in order to prevent future deterioration and the potential of more serious injury through falls. The Neurological and Stroke Unit provided me with the opportunity to observe new and complex conditions such as spasticity management, motor-neuron conditions and stroke patients. Aside from the physical treatment, what struck me here was the importance of remaining objective with the patients and maintaining a positive approach. This psychological element was something that I had covered in my degree but was poignant to witness in a real clinical environment and was inspiring. In the Older Adult Mental Health Ward, I observed elderly patients who had come from ITU following surgery and needed greater rehabilitation before they were discharged, due to their slower recovery capability. In the Respiratory Ward, I witnessed sufferers of chronic lung disease who needed physiotherapy to help them breath more comfortably. The physiotherapist demonstrated a number of different techniques, including those more gentle ones that avoided increasing a patients’ blood pressure. Other techniques included the use of an incentive spirometer, walking and manual therapy, with the use of percussion. I found this extremely interesting because I was less familiar with the extent of the roll of physiotherapists specialising in respiratory conditions and the vital role they play in the delivery of treatments to assist and promote recovery. I managed a small store where I worked as a key-holder and a customer consultant. I was responsible for telephone consultations with other UK stores, as well as delegating tasks to other employees. I enhanced my communication skills through engagement with customers, to advise them on products. I learnt about the ethics of the trade and the application of make up, to help customers engage with their 'inner' and 'outer' beauty in order to improve their confidence and self esteem. I spent a day at The Bridge Clinic, a private medical centre, where I shadowed a physiotherapist who specialises in spinal and neck injuries. Here, I gained further insight into patient management and referrals processes, covering the importance of accurate personal information, the use of body charts and medical histories. During the day, I was fortunate to observe many fascinating cases covering musculoskeletal injuries such as disc bulges, labrum tears and shoulder dislocations, referred pain and neurological problems, as well as treatments such as epidural jabs, ultrasound, trigger pointing and acupuncture. I particularly enjoyed learning about more general issues such as chronic degenerative conditions or complications arising post-surgery. The manual therapy applied here was very similar to what I observed at Aberystwyth Town Football Club. Show less

    • Physiotherapy Assistant
      • Sep 2012 - May 2013

I was the physiotherapist’s assistant during my final year at university and attended every match and training session of the Aberystwyth Town Football Club. I observed the many different roles she was responsible for, including the diagnosis and treatment of many of the more common traumas experienced by footballers, such as, musculoskeletal injuries, ‘dead leg’ and ligament tears. I was able to closely observe the provision of pitch-side first aid, including, the use and application of ice bags and support grips, as well as taping and strapping injured sites to assist in muscle repair. I covered many different treatment exercises, such as rehabilitation drills to gradually build back muscle strength and improve range of movement (ROM) and I observed deep tissue manipulation massage, noting the techniques, applications and particularly learning about assessing recovery time depending on the severity of an injury. Whilst I found that I really thrived in this sporting environment, I noted that many of the injuries and treatments I observed would be highly relevant outside a sports context and it is this that completely reinforced my ambition to become a physiotherapist, ideally within an NHS environment.
