I assisted in hiring Kevin as a contract Unix Systems Engineer back in 1996 through Core Technology Limited to manage Housing New Zealands Fleet of HP-UX 9000 series servers. Today Kevin is the Primary Unix Engineer at HNZC supporting approximately 50 Red Hat Linux Based servers in 2 data centres. Kevin's thorough work in this area has resulted in extremely highly available and secure systems for which there have been no security issues, no audit findings of concern and recently an external report found that these systems were of exceptional quality. I would thoroughly recommend Kevin as a Senior Systems Engineer to any organisation and would hire him / contract him again if given the chance. I would consider Kevin a Redhat Guru.

(Note: Core Technology, was acquired by Certus Solutions early 2016) As a consultant I work closely with specialist high-performance teams on client sites in both technical and advisory roles. Recent work has been around the areas of designing and deploying secure, automated, high-availability Amazon Cloud environments, including EC2, S3, Glacier, Auto Scaling, CloudWatch, SES, RDS, Route 53, IAM, Elastic Load Balancing and System Integration with external services. I also have a senior lead position in the DevOps team where I provide technical guidance in defining and implementing the change and release processes for all client solutions into various public and private cloud environments. This enables us to provide just-enough process to protect the integrity of the production solution while ensuring the flexibility required in our agile paradigms. Mentoring other team members whom may require help with some particular knowledge or experience is also an important aspect of the role. Show less

Contracted to the Network Management Centre / Platform Services Teams. I was involved in a large number of support and project roles during this time. I was the sole person responsible for the administration and support of a nation-wide network of high-end production HP and Linux servers, as well as a number of development systems and their users. I automated a large number of day-to-day management tasks which have resulted in a much-reduced workload, lowering the overhead and support costs for these systems. I was actively involved in the championing of technical initiatives to the business and contributed to numerous business cases and internal sales efforts pitched at business units. The costs involved in the purchase of a package (such as HP OpenView) to manage this environment was prohibitive for such an organisation. Instead, I developed a small toolset consisting of a number of smaller applications and scripts specific to the HNZ environment. I continued to be the senior technical designer and support technician for various Linux initiatives, including the implementation of a Firewall, Proxy, Application, File Share and Database on a single stand-alone Linux server to provide a neighbourhood unit with a self-contained processing environment. I was the key technical resource involved in an initiative by our group to replace all 21 HP-UX servers with Linux based systems. After evaluating a variety of hardware and Operating System solutions I was able to develop, test and deploy 19 Linux systems to replace all existing HP-UX servers. This work improved performance as well as reduced maintenance costs for the organisation without compromising the business deliverables. More recently I was been involved in another complete hardware refresh during the migration to Oracle Web Forms along with the installation and management of an additional nine systems (web, application and database servers) to bring the external facing side of the business in-house. I was contracted for a three month project to replace their ageing firewall server with an industry best practice, and up-to-date, architecture. This included the design, configuration and installation of all components. The design was that of a dual-firewall system (FW-1&PIX) separated by perimeter networks consisting of gateway servers. All other, non-gateway, traffic was sent through the Proxy (ISA) Server, meaning that there was no direct connection between the two, firewall systems. My position at Tritec was within the newly created systems implementation division. I was part of a small team involved in the setting up, and installation of 130 UNIX servers throughout the country for the Department of Social Welfare. I saw this project through from the very start and up to its conclusion. I was also involved in the design and implementation of the many tools required in managing this large nation-wide network. I was in the systems support and pre-sales area of the business. I was involved in following projects from both the research and design phase right through the pre-sales presentations and final ordering, installation and support. I was heavily involved in the Facilities Management side of our business, dealing with many large national organisations, as well as being directly responsible for all aspects of the internal LAN. When required I also perform product presentations for new developments. The majority of my time was directed at creating new products. These developments invariably involved client/server architecture, designed around client specifications, and as such I was heavily involved in the set-up and installation of UNIX based imaging, OCR, and database management systems for the various clients.
