    • Sustainable Aquaculture Feed Intern
      • Jun 2013 - Sep 2013

While working at Olazul my primary involvement was in their sustainable feed program, working to produce a fishmeal substitute from fishery waste in communities throughout Baja California Sur, Mexico. The goal is to determine if it is economically feasible and ecologically beneficial for small fishing communities to use their fish waste to produce and sell a nutritious marine-based protein source that could be used instead of fishmeal in fertilizers and feeds. During my internship, some of my activities included:• Interviewing fishermen, processors, and all other stakeholders involved in the fishery supply chain to gain a better understanding of the organizational structure and gauge interest in the project• Interviewing feed producers, farmers, and aquaculturists to determine the possible demand for a fishmeal alternative• Conducting fish silage experiments to determine best production procedures. Fish silage is a possible fishmeal alternative that could be produced from fishery waste. It is made by fermenting the fish discards through addition of lactic-acid producing bacteria• Developing a fish silage production protocol to be shared with interested communities.Additionally, while interning at Olazul I was involved with marine algae cultivation and offshore shrimp aquaculture. For more information on my master's thesis, please visit: http://www2.bren.ucsb.edu/~fishmeal/
