The Dialectical Behavior Therapy Child and Family Program was developed for families with children ages 6 to 10 who experience difficulty regulating intense emotions to the point that it interfered with their ability to learn in school, enjoy their lives, be effective in social situations, or manage their behavior. Intensive sessions as well as telephone support outside of operating hours were available for this family-based DBT program. Some of the children referred for treatment had been formally diagnosed with depression or anxiety disorders, while others exhibited more externalizing symptoms. The common factor for all participants was the difficulty of regulating strong emotions. The goal of the program was to decrease suffering and misery that children and families experience when they are unable to manage their emotions effectively. The program was designed to also help parents cope with their child’s regulation of emotions, as well as teach them effective parenting strategies such as positive discipline, acceptance, and supportive structure. Teaching these coping skills would increase the likelihood that children's behavior would continue to positively change after the sessions were complete, with the support of appropriate parental support. It was a pleasure to work with the families! Show less
