I conducted research in Dr. Achala KC's lab at the Southern Oregon Research and Extension Center which is affiliated with Oregon State University. I studied gray mold disease in pear and grapevine trunk diseases. I collected flower and fruit samples from orchards and vineyards in order to determine the types of pathogenic fungi that are present. I also tested different types of management practices to investigate how these diseases are best controlled. The results from these studies were reported to growers with the goal of providing them with effective methods on how to manage pear and grape crops. Show less

I conducted research in Dr. Steven Lindow’s lab on the plant bacterial pathogen, Pseudomonas syringae B728a. By using fluorescence microscopy and tools in microbiology and molecular biology, I was able to visualize cells taken from the surfaces of bean leaves to assess their survival under different conditions such as water stress. I have also performed RNA sequencing and done data analysis in R to examine what genes in P. syringae B728a are expressed when the bacterium attaches to a surface. During my time in the lab, I have mentored three undergraduate researchers and have attended and presented at national and international conferences on plant and microbial interactions. Show less

Oct 2008 - Jun 2012
Conducted scientific research in the department of Molecular Cell and Developmental Biology under Dr. Ann Hirsch. Assisted Dr. Hirsch, Dr. Nancy Fujishige, and Dr. Annette Angus with their research projects by performing various tasks including triparental matings and inoculating plants with bacterial strains. Conducted research on own project which examined the role of quorum sensing in symbiotic plant-microbe interactions by using microscopy to look at the concentration of bacterial cells of Sinorhizobium meliloti, a strain involved in nitrogen fixation, in the nodules of the legume Melilotus alba. Presented current findings at UCLA’s Science Poster Day and was awarded the Dean's Award. Show less
