As a self-employed community health contractor, I worked with multiple organizations to author ambitious development plans and submit compelling grant applications to a variety of funders, e.g., federal government, state government, foundations, corporations, and donor-advised funds. I also authored sophisticated reports and tracked grant activity in a variety of software programs. I served as a part-time executive director for a Colorado-based nonprofit. In this role, I developed and managed a board, managed all development and communication activities, executed budget management activities, engaged donors, conducted program evaluation design and implementation, and managed all policy advocacy efforts. I also conducted national policy research and analysis for Boulder County Community Health Improvement Program on gun violence prevention, increasing community mental health services using taxation strategies, and a variety of other healthy equity programs and policies.. I conducted data collection and analysis for Center for Research Strategies and the Northern Colorado Health Alliance in relation to the Thriving Colorado Dashboard project. Finally, I provided coaching and training on a variety of policy and coalition-building skills for the Regional Institute for Health and Environmental Leadership and the Rocky Mountain Public Health Training Center.

Health Promotion Supervisor

As program manager, I secured more than three million dollars in grant funds from the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment and LiveWell Colorado to implement a countywide healthy eating active living program to promote policies and programs to reduce the root causes of poor health. In this role, I also conducted policy research, monitored relevant legislation, drafted policy, coordinated expert testimony, and authored policy briefs. Our team successfully developed and implemented the county’s first Food Policy Council and Active Living Coalition responsible for more than thirty changes in policy and regulations to reduce health disparities. Our team also managed two community grant programs to promote the use of technologies to assess food access and transit challenges in low income communities. I was also responsible to implement and evaluate more than seven communication campaigns using a mix of paid, earned, and social media to promote policy change, raise the profile of a coalition, or promote behavior change. Finally, as a program manager, I designed staffing patterns and budgets, hired and supervised staff and contractors, designed and managed an intern program, conducted contract procurement, and ensured contract compliance with state and local funders.

In this exciting and varied role, I provided technical assistance to more than twenty rural and urban health centers to improve patient outcomes by implementing clinical guidelines, process improvement strategies, team-based care strategies, and patient engagement tools. I also authored grants to increase the number of clinical sites to spread impact of the project. I recruited, hired, trained, and supervised additional coaches. Finally, I authored reports and fact sheets, conducted program evaluation, and monitored local, state and national health care policy.

Community Health Specialist / Local Public Health Department Coach and Mentor

In this varied role, I conducted program planning, implementation and evaluation. I also served on a steering committee to ensure successful adoption of tobacco-free ordinances in Lafayette, Longmont and Unincorporated Boulder County. Our program team was also responsible for countywide campaign strategies to promote the successful adoption of the Colorado's Tobacco Tax (Amendment 35) and Colorado's Clean Indoor Air Initiative. I was responsible for drafting and implementing a variety of campaign strategies that included gathering endorsements, circulating petitions, organizing public testimony, drafting letters to the editors, meeting with editorial boards, and promoting campaign evaluation strategies. I also successfully partnered with multiple hospital systems and fifteen clinical practices to implement clinical guidelines and tobacco-free campus policies. Finally, I served as a coach and mentor to multiple local public health departments to promote best practices, grow coalitions, and promote statewide policy priorities.
