    • Teacher of Science
      • Sep 2015 - Dec 2016

I was the first point of contact from all directions be it students, parents, teachers and heads of years. Having to deal with issues has allowed me to develop my skill of problem solving and devising strategies to tackle any pastoral issues students in my form class may be displaying. Finally, the role of being a form tutor has developed my ability to communicate bad and good news to parents and as a result has allowed me to acquire the ability to build relationships with people outside of the schooling establishment. During my time at Bournville Academy, I had been put in charge of two separate projects in my first year of teaching. One being an after-school club and another being an Engineering Project (EES). Organising and running these two extracurricular activities/schemes has allowed me to develop my self-management skills, my time management skills and helped develop my skills in managing members within the school establishment and external members of staff, e.g. Network Rail engineers. For the EES Project, I had to communicate with students and Network Rail Project Managers to organise meetings, workshop activities and the construction of a bridge. The project was also a character building experience as it required constant attention when having to organise meeting, trips and deadlines with my additional school responsibilities. Working to tight deadlines, motivating a team of sixth formers, supervising the sixth formers, communicating vital information between the school and engineers and overseeing the whole project has developed my leadership skills. Although the journey was difficult, the end results were excellent with the students presenting an excellent project to the top 5 engineering companies in the UK. This project was shared to my form classes and has had a positive impact on the students’ involvement in STEM subjects and projects. Show less
