Gender-Base Violence/Livelihood Program Coordinator
-
Sep 2012 - Jan 2019
The GBV/Livelihood Program Coordinator for RefuSHE (formerly Heshima Kenya), I was the focal person for the community outreach field-related activities. In my role, I collaborated very closely with UNHCR, Government and other CSOs. I have conducted numerous needs-based assessments, community-based sensitization and training, and participated in many panels and inter-agency policy/advocacy groups to advance dialogue and solutions for neglected urban refugees and the protection of unaccompanied refugee minors. I have collected data to understand trends within the urban refugee community, especially in terms of migration patterns, risks, exploitation in transit, reproductive health needs, and barriers to livelihood assistance that result in harmful coping practices. I identified unmet needs related to literacy and livelihood and went on to lead the roll-out of programs to address these matters where they previously did not exist at RefuSHE. I have provided training and support for entrepreneurial refugee survivors of SGBV to foster independence through case management and economic empowerment. I am an expert community organizer, having led numerous workshops, campaigns and training on prevention and response to SGBV. Under my leadership at RefuSHE, I conducted comprehensive assessments on urban refugees' needs and responses including the specific needs of survivors of SGBV, girls, adolescents and youth in urban areas through GBV/Child Protection working group and regular updates. Through a multi-sectoral approach and with data-sharing agreements, we harmonized existing information systems, including the Child Protection Information Management System (CPIMS) and Gender-Based Violence Information Management System (GBVIMS) to capture categories of abuse and improve reporting mechanisms.
